Document Summary

Set of mathematical procedures for organizing, summarizing, and interpreting information. Entire set of individuals of interest for a particular research question. A set of individuals selected from a population, usually intended to represent the population in a research study. Characteristic/condition that changes or has values for different individuals. Statistical procedures used to simplify and summarize data. Methods that use data to make general statements about a population. Naturally occuring discrepancy/error that exists between a sample statistic and the corresponding population parameter. A researcher is interested in the effect of amount of sleep on high school students" exam scores. A group of 75 high school boys agreed to participate in the study. They are samples because they are representing the high school population. This is true because samples are much easier to obtain and study rather than a whole population of individuals. When a sample differs from the population, there is a systematic difference between groups.
