It makes acth, releases it to the adrenal glands to the cortex and that releases cortisol, releases at parts of the body, feeds to the brain and parts of the brain. The hippocampus plays a big role in turning of the system. Too much cortisol can damage the hippocampus, as it has lots of cortisol receptors. If you have long-term stress, the hippocampus can become smaller. Vicious cycle, you need cortisol to get through a(cid:374)(cid:454)iet(cid:455) parts of (cid:455)our life, (cid:271)ut if it"s (cid:272)o(cid:374)ti(cid:374)uous, the hippo(cid:272)a(cid:373)pus (cid:449)ill suffer. Yes, it can come back and you can increase the volume of the hippocampus. I. e. if you have ptsd and one of the characteristics is heightened cortisol and the hippocampus cannot turn off that part of the response. You need it for your memory and will be effected.
