Lots of negative emotions are studied because they are related to action more so than positive ones. There are di erences between moods, feelings and emotions, but they are unclear as they are similar in nature. Samuel johnson de nition of emotion is disturbances of mind, vehemence of passion, pleasing or painful. David hume describing social or physical agitation by mental agitation or excitement. Ekman there are 8 distinctive expressions: anger, sadness, happiness, fear, disgust, surprise, contempt, embarrassment. In particular, pride has been proposed to be a universally recognized expression: it is di erent in that it involves much of the body, not just the face. Erect posture, head tilted back, slight smile, arms extending away or held akimbo. Despite the universal nature of facial expressions, some cultural variation exists. Display rules dictate the intense of expressions, when an expression is appropriate, and ritualized displays.
