PSY 3171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Proband, Informed Consent, Endophenotype
Document Summary
Hypothesis: any educated guess or statement to be tested by data. Research design: the plan for testing the hypothesis. Dependant variable: the outcome variable you plan to measure; the thing you think is affected. Independent variable: the variable you think affects the outcome. Depression is more common in women than in men. People with depression tend to have more than one disorder and depression can onset as a result of another disorder: medication use, depressive severity. Internal validity making sure your study is testing what it needs to study. Problem with study very tough to generalize findings to people outside of the people you have chosen for the study. External validity how much we can generalize our findings to the general population. Will always be in balance to sacrifice one for the other. Case study method: used by freud psychoanalytic theory, see someone with a particular disorder and describe he did, if the patient got better or worse.
