Used to be part of anxiety disorder in dsm-4. Person felt that they had no choice but to repeat compulsions to cope with the obsession of cleanliness. First goal of cbt is to identify irrational ideas or thoughts. Exposure therapy (or experiments) has someone imagine what they fear. In vivo exposure: stay in situation long enough causes anxiety to decrease on its own. Person realizes compulsions do not need to happen to relieve the anxiety. Obsessions: recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced as intrusive or unwanted. Urge is the feeling of needing to do something.
