PSY 3171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Tricyclic Antidepressant, Interpersonal Psychotherapy
Document Summary
Depression treatments: medication: tricyclic antidepressants, mao inhibitors, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, psychotherapy: cognitive behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy. Trigger: failing a test or getting a bad grade, someone with depression would attribute that to failure oriented thoughts such as sadness, frustration, shame, and exhibit withdrawing behaviour leading to even more negative thoughts. Cbt changes these processes from negative to positive in both thoughts and behaviours. Behavioural activation: start something (ie. if you don"t want to go to the gym but within ten minuets you"re enjoying it) and planning activities for both mastery and enjoyment, it is a 10/12 week manualized treatment. Exercise: 3-4 times a week over the course of 2-4 months dramatically reduces symptoms of depression. Self reliance training: teaching the individual how to do things. Restructuring: homework: going out to do activities and monitoring the response, automatic thought records: tracking feelings throughout the day, behavioural experiments: monitoring the results of their behaviour, responsibility pies.
