Document Summary
Supernatural tradition: complex ideas of how psychological disorders were caused: witches, demons, possession. Biological tradition: humours, syphilis, hormone imbalance, hysteria believed to be caused by uterus moving around in women"s" bodies, unconscious urges tip of the iceberg metaphor. Behaviour is largely driven by all of our unconscious. Psychosocial tradition: stress/trauma, core beliefs, reinforced behaviours. Psychological tradition: locus of control, attritional style, information processing, attachment, comorbid disorders, traumas, self-esteem. Biological tradition: genetics, neurobiology, hormones, family history, sex. Social/spiritual tradition: gender, stress, interpersonal relationships, ethnicity, ses, employment status. These interact with each other to predetermine our mental health. Example: biological tendencies to take more risks = more likely to experience more trauma after jumping out of a plane. Stressful life events interact with vulnerability to lead to a genetic disorder: many people experience traumatic events, only few develop ptsd, death: pretty serious consequences from experiencing loss, genetically predisposition to develop disorders. Self esteem bullying can lead to disorder.
