PSY 3171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Conduct Disorder, Comorbidity, Pathological Lying
Document Summary
Personality in itself is enduring, culturally universal personality traits which involve ways of thinking, acting, feeling. Personality traits are relatively stable and involve a genetic component. Big 5: openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism (ocean) Originates in childhood and continues into adulthood. Dsm-5: persistent patter of emotions, cognitions, and behaviours that results in enduring emotional distress for person affected and/or for others and may cause difficulties with work and relationships. Non-problematic: situational traits, occasional, bad personality when stressed (tired, hungry, upset), changes over time. Problematic: traits are universal, frequent, extreme when stressed, enduring over time. These could be seen on a spectrum (ie. dimensional) but dsm5 currently sees them on a categorical basis. Because personality traits are evaluated on a spectrum perhaps personality disorders should be too. Example: hostility can be seen on a spectrum of normal to problematic depending on the situation, how often it occurs, cultural dependence.
