Chapter 2 an integrative approach to psychopathology. Genes are very long molecules of dna at various locations on chromosomes within the cell nucleus. Physical characteristics such as hair & eye colour are strongly influenced by out genetic endowment. Normal human cells have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs. In each pair, one chromosome comes from father and one from mother. The first 22 pairs of chromosomes provide programs for the development of the body and brain, the last pair, called the sex chromosome, determines the individuals sex. In females, both chromosomes in the 23rd pair are called x chromosomes, and in males the mother contributes one x chromosome and the father one y chromosome. The dna molecules that contain genes have a certain structure, a double helix. Is something is wrong in the ordering of these molecules on the double helix, we have a defective gene.
