Depression, bipolar disorder, and treatment of mood disorders. Include: major depression, dysthymia, double depression, mania, bipolar disorders, cyclothymic disorder: major depression. Extremely depressed mood state lasting at least 2 weeks. Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by either subjective report (e. g. , feels sad or empty) or observation made by others (e. g. , appears tearful). A change from previous functioning; at least one of the symptoms is either (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of interest or pleasure. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day. Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day: other depressive disorders. Dysthymia: milder symptoms over a longer period of time (mild + chronic). Double depression: dysthymia with a major depressive episode. Seasonal affective disorder (sad): related to reduced sunlight in the fall/winter. Post-partum depression: may occur after childbirth: mania.
