The goal of freudian psychoanalysis is for patients to understand the unconscious factors controlling behaviour. Taps into the unconscious, repressed memories and events, etc. Involves an interpretation of what the client is telling you. Transference = unconscious redirection of feelings from one person to another. Many former followers of freud modified his psychoanalytic approach. Focus is on the person"s current experience, emphasizing free will and encouraging personal responsibility. Focus on the current, the here and now, the experience the person wants to change, etc. Emphasis of free will, responsibility, human potential, etc. Therapist tries to make the person aware of his or her potential for growth and making choices. Concerted with human existence and the lack of meaning in a person"s life. Distortions exist in awareness of feelings, which are responsible for impairments in personal growth. Focus on the here and now and those problems affecting there here and now.
