If there is a context that explains the symptoms, psychologists have to be more considerate when diagnosing patients with a disorder in the dsm-5. In this case, working with the parent might be a topic of interest to explore. Whether something is abnormal is not dependent on the cause. The dsm is explicitly a theoretical doesn"t take into consideration contexts. Very often we will see similar etiological explanations for different disorders. Alternatively, different causal mechanisms may result in same disorder. Important that the two is always at play. Multifinality idea that the same cause can have different outcomes. Equifinality idea that the same disorder can come from multiple causes. Pointing to the context of the child or individual. Symptom presentation: depression in children different from adult presentation. Children can have differences in sleep, weight changes, etc. The main difference in children is irritability. Dsm changes all the time for children.
