Neuropsychological deficits: behaviour that stems from neurological functions. Limited capacity cognitive system: allows us to actively hold and use critical info in mind despite ongoing distraction, auditory-verbal or visual-spatial, ex. It is impaired: related with symptoms of inattention, particularly for visual-spatial information, problems evident on standardized tests. Impairments evident across all ages, but diminish in adolescence. Following a conversation: writing a paragraph, playing a game (ex. Functional deficits: problems that are secondary to symptoms that create difficulties in a persons daily functioning: children with adhd, problems with peers, conduct problems, parent-child conflict. Increased injuries: poor self concept, school failure, language difficulties. Increased special ed placement: adolescence with adhd, substance abuse, relationship difficulties, gaming addictions, mood problems, school failure, high school drop-out, motor vehicle accidents. Lower engagement: chronic underachievement, higher rates of learning disabilities, poor work accuracy and completion, require more instruction and practice, higher rates of special ed, problems with homework accuracy and completion, poor relationships with teachers.
