Joann spurzheim (1776-1832: thought people could use phrenology to improve their life. Indiscriminate decision about what faculties exist and where they are completely arbitrary, no real facts. Used the ablation method: removed or damaged part of the brain and observed any changes in the a(cid:374)i(cid:373)al"s abilities. Iron rod got shot into his face and out the back of his head. No physical damage (besides injury scars, etc. ) but personality issues. Localization of language functioning the clinical method: observations in a clinical setting, posthumous examination of brain structures. Paul broca (1824-1880: had a patient at his hospital and understood everything that was said to him, but (cid:272)ould(cid:374)"t speak, bro(cid:272)a"s area da(cid:373)age inability to speak. Carl wernicke (1848-(cid:1005)9(cid:1004)4(cid:895) (cid:894)wer(cid:374)i(cid:272)ke"s aphasia: very fluent speech but makes no sense, poor language comprehension, usually due to stroke.
