Christianity in the beginning wasn"t about the sanctity of life but something like sanctity of death . The sanctity of life idea was built over time. Some christians started killing themselves with the belief that they would be martyrs, and would be rewarded with heaven. Romans called them a death seeking cult . In 313 they had to establish the religion but mass martyrdom had already caught on so there had to be things implemented to slow down martyrs. Church leaders played a big role in doing this: st. paul. If you believe in this that means you believe that when you suffer you have to be patient and endure: clement of alexandria. He was into praising martyrdom at first but they needed followers. Declares a new truth: suicide or provoking martyrdom are equivalent to murder and homicide and are mortal sins.
