Government: formal organization that has legal and political authority to regulate the relationships among members of a society and between society and others state: political entity that possesses legitimate monopoly over use of force within its territory. Power: ability to carry out will despite opposition. Authority: power people accept as legitimate, not coercive (ie. reflects own values) legitimation: process by which power is institutionalized and given a moral foundation to justify existence. Weber"s three ideal types of authority: charismatic: leader"s exceptional qualities or accomplishments, traditional: respect for long standing custom, rational-legal: legitimized by law or written rules and regulation. Leaders obtain their position in procedurally correct manner. Authority is invested in office, not person. Hunting and gathering societies have no politics. Agrarian societies: first emergence of political institutions. Cities develop: power extents and one area becomes center of political power.
