Document Summary

A social insituion is a set of organized rules, statuses, paterns of society. Insituion is made of rules and standardized ways of doing something; more abstract. Groups are made up of people with names and faces. A family is a group; the family is a social insituion. Over of canadians say family is the most important thing in their life. Cannot say a family is made of mom and dad, doesn"t account for single moms/dads or same sex couples. Cannot be a nuclear subunit (all under one roof) because it doesn"t involve family living in other places. Cannot say it"s a group of people related by blood because it misses adopion, or bonds by marriage because it forgets the kids. Egg donor, surrogate mother, sperm donor, adopive parents etc. By logic children haven"t been hand picked by parents, and have been a blessing or a curse. New technologies are taking the randomness out, the children become a customized commodity.
