Describes our physical bodies whereby disinguish between male & female. Gender socially constructed characterisics associated with girls/boys & men/women. Transgender and transsexual individuals: transgender umbrella term for those who do not it into normaive construcions of sex & gender, transsexual encompass those who undergo sex reassignment surgery. Culturally dominant forms of masculinity/femininity: hegemonic masculinity (connell) Men are supposed to strive to achieve. Derives from gramsci (requires men to be successful, capable, reliable) Irrevocably ied to heterosexuality: emphasized femininity (connell) Women"s compliance with their subordinaion to men. Requires women to be supporive, enthusiasic, and sexually atracive. Families: gender expectaions begin at birth & gender divisions of household labour, parents spend more ime talking to girls while leaving boys alone. Educaion: hidden curriculum girls learn they are not as important as boys. Teachers interact with the boys more than the girls: teachers also praise girls for being neat & congenial while boys are praised for intellectual quality.
