Document Summary

Carbon is able to form large, complex, and diverse molecules. Proteins, dna, carbohydrates in living matter are all composed of carbon compounds. Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-containing compounds. Most contain hydrogen in addition to carbon. Stanley miller"s classic experiment demonstrated abiotic synthesis of organic compounds. Support idea that abiotic synthesis of organic compounds could have arisen in early earth conditions. Carbon atoms form diverse molecules by bonding to four other atoms. Electron configuration determines kinds and number of bonds an atom will form with other atoms. Carbon can form four covalent bonds with a variety of atoms. Carbon single bonded to four other atoms has a tetrahedral shape. When two carbon atoms joined by a double bond, atoms bonded to carbons are in the same plane. The valences of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are the building code of living molecules. Carbon atoms can partner with atoms other than hydrogen.
