Document Summary

Pulmonary circuit -- carries blood from and to gas exchange areas in lungs. Begins at right ventricle, ends at left atrium. Systemic circuit carries blood to & from the rest of body. Begins at left ventricle, ends at right atrium. Each circuit begins & ends at heart. Blood returning from the systemic circuit must complete pulmonary circuit before re-entering systemic circuit & vice versa. Arteries carry the blood away from the heart, except pulmonary arteries. Veins carry the blood towards the heart, except pulmonary veins. Capillaries interconnect smallest arteries + veins, where exchange of nutrients/gases/wastes occurs. Right atrium (ra): receives blood via systemic veins (vena cava) from the systemic circuit and sends it to right ventricle (rv) Rv: sends blood to pulmonary circuit via pulmonary arteries (deoxygenated) Left atrium (la): receives blood from the pulmonary circuit via pulmonary veins (oxygenated) and sends it to left ventricle (lv) Lv: sends blood to systemic circuit via systemic arteries (aorta).
