A social movement is a collecive, organized, sustained and noninsituional challenge to authoriies, powerholders or cultural beliefs and pracices . Emerges as a criique of collecive acion theory. Argues that socially connected individuals are most likely to be mobilized for collecive acion. The key determinants of successful collecive acion are the available resources. Mobilizing structures may be either formal or informal networks. Networked informaion economy allows members of social movements to: Share personal experiences and create a sense of togetherness. Contemporary large-scale acion networks are increasingly based on personalized content across connected icts rather than hierarchical and centralized forms of organizaion. Two categories of connecive acion: organizaionally enabled networks, self organizing networks.
