Document Summary

Env100: module 4 session 42, 43 & 44 (atmospheric science and weather) Atmosphere = thin layer of gases that surrounds a planet or moon. Human activity is changing the amounts of some gases = affects functioning of the atmosphere. 2nd most variable = aerosols from a variety of sources. Atmospheric properties include temperature, pressure, ad humidity . Atmospheric pressure: force per unit area produced by an overlying column of air (weight of overlying gases. E. g. , the air is thinner at the top of a mountain) Relative humidity: ratio of water vapor in a volume of air, compared to the amount it could contain at a given temperature. Atmospheric layers are defined by changes in temperature and composition. Well-mixed; contains most of the atmosphere"s mass. Temperature declines with altitude heated from below by earth"s surface. Colder in its lower regions; temperature increases upward. Contains a concentration of uv radiation-blocking ozone, 17-30 km altitude.
