JGE378H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: 1883 Eruption Of Krakatoa, Krakatoa, Cumulonimbus Cloud
Document Summary
The august 1883 eruption of krakatau ( krakatoa ) was one of the worst ever recorded in history. It was a catastrophic event that resulted in the death of over 36,000 people. Krakatau was located in the sunda strait, an area between the indonesian islands, java and sumatra (hurlbut and verbeek, 1887). The island of krakatau lies directly above the subduction zone, where the indo-australian plates meet ( ba, tomita, yamamoto, 1992). Records have shown past eruptions in may of 1680 so the volcanic island was said to be sleeping for two hundred years (american association, 1885). This island contained three cones, with each one erupting in 1883 (francis and self, 1983). The massive eruption on august 27, 1883 was the greatest, but it was not the only that took place. Evidence and personal firsthand recollections suggested that eruptions began in may of 1883, but were comparatively smaller.
