PSY310H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Parenting Styles, Nuclear Family, Systems Theory
Document Summary
Applied to any family structure; we are going to use the most basic (mother, father, and one child) Families are systems: organized whole, greater than just the sum of its parts. More than just the individuals that make up the family. These subsystems are all related to each other. Circularity of influence- the subsystems interact with each other and mutually influence each other. Rely on each other for certain needs, desires, goal; need each other in order to function. What happens in one subsystem will influence what happens in another subsystem. Ex father wants his son to clean his room, son says he"s busy and will do it when he gets to it. Father and son arguing back and forth and mother intervenes - you can clean his room when he gets time- father gets mad at the mother. External factors can affect the family - ex: stress from work can affect how she responds to her husband.
