SOC224H5 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Traditional Authority, Charismatic Authority, Boarding School
Document Summary
Lecture 2 education and teaching in canada. Education varied cross-culturally: no one was in charge of education system, now, provinces are responsible. Schools weren"t seen as necessary due to importance of agriculture: working on family farms. Children were valuable for their work, therefore shouldn"t need to leave home. Parents and family members taught children these skilled trades. Apprenticeship system closest thing to education we have today. Provinces became entrusted with creating and managing the school system: religious groups were the dominant people behind school systems, went around communities to speak about the schools, only some children attended schools, no universal participation. Children would only go to school if their labour was not needed on the farm: most schools were in elementary level, very few options were secondary schools (usually private) Other forces shaping the development of the education system: economic forces, diff set of skills taught in school setting, not necessarily from family, shift from who was providing education.
