Many new technologies have begun to change the way men/women look to outsiders. Breast reduction/implants, eyelid surgery, hair transplants, facial surgery, abdominoplasty. During the past 10 years, over 10,000 canadian men received aesthetic surgery. This is a reflection of masculinity negotiation. Purpose is to have healthier-looking, youthful, attractive bodies. Southern ontario region: 19-65 years old, majority single, middle class earning. Purpose is to fade into the crowd as a normal guy . Men feel they"ve been dislodged by women"s participation in economic/political spheres. Old men in the midst of younger women could face challenges in this direction. Post-modernism challenged scientists to question the existing concepts and models: began to deconstruct old concepts and models, health promotion is one of these attempts, we"ve also moved away from a production-oriented economy to service-oriented. Consumerism has taken over many aspects of our daily lives. Medical interventions have taken over some new functions regarding body image: organ transplantation, dna research, aids and aih.
