Document Summary

A causal relationship between structure and functions exists in many molecules. The structure of dna allows it to be stored and transmitted as genetic information from one generation to the next. Griffith used streptococcus pneumoniae, virulent (harmful) strain that causes pneumonia and death. Other strand was nonvirulent, and mice survived. After heat killing the virulent and injecting it into the mouse, the mouse stayed alive. After heat killing the virulent strain, the debris was mixed with live virulent cells, some nonvirulent cells became virulent. Co(cid:374)(cid:272)luded that a (cid:373)ole(cid:272)ule i(cid:374) de(cid:271)ris (cid:272)arried ge(cid:374)eti(cid:272) i(cid:374)fo for (cid:448)irule(cid:374)(cid:272)e (cid:271)ut he did(cid:374)(cid:859)t identify the molecule. Virulent cells were killed with heat, remains were purified to make solution along with trace rna and proteins to see if they would transform transformation. Solution was treated with rnase, protease, and dnase, enzymes that destroyed respective components. Rnase destroys rna, protease destroys proteins, and dnase destroys dna.
