Document Summary

Concept of a gene as a unit of inheritance. Genome: collective body of genetic info that is present in a species. Contains all genes required to build an organism. We have means to reconstruct path of human evolution by comparing corresponding regions of the genome in related organisms. Goal: to mate (cross) pea plants having different inheritable characteristics to determine how these characteristics were transmitted to the offspring. Drew conclusions: characteristics of plants were governed by genes (distinct factors of inheritance. Individual plant had 2 copies of a gene that controlled the development of each trait one from each parent. Two pairs can be identical or nonidentical. Alleles : alternate forms of a gene. One of the two alleles was dominant over the other. When both present together in same plant existence of: each gamete (reproductive cell) made by plant had only one copy of a gene for recessive allele overpowered by dominant allele each trait.
