Document Summary

2 experiments that show that dna despite less complex than proteins are the genetic material: Studies of virulent strains showed that a transforming principle could be passed from one bacteria to another and that dna probably carries the information. Studied viruses that infect bacteria(bacteriophage or phage), proved that phage dna(not protein) was responsible for the viral infection. Showed that heat killed & lysed bacteria (streptococcus) contained a transforming principle . *some soluble factor must be taken up by the live capsuleless (r) cells to transform them into a virulent encapsulent (s) strain. Postulated the transforming principle (tp) was dna based on: Chemical properties of the tp were consisted with it being dna. No other type of material could be detected in the preparation. Lyse cells, filter to obtain cell free extract. Use enzymes that degrade a specific macromolecule (e. g. dnase destroys dna) Inject mice with the altered extract to determine if it retained the transforming property.
