Document Summary

Balance of nature -> natural systems are stable and tend to return to an original state after disturbance. Each species has a role to play in that balance. Life wouldn"t exist w/o interactions: these interactions are complex. Can never account for all factors in nature. Difficult to predict outcomes of ecological events + interactions: but there are universal laws, we just need to figure them out. Carbon based life forms -> need energy + c to grow/carry out basic functions/reproduce: these + space is limited. Organismal ecology -> population ecology -> community ecology -> ecosystem ecology -> biosphere. Individuals that can interbreed are considered a species. Population: all individuals of a single species that live together (interact with each other) in a given place and time. Community: an assemblage of populations living close enough together for potential interaction. The biotic components interacting in a given place and time. Ecosystem: a group of biotic communities interacting with their shared abiotic environment.
