Document Summary

Impact of psychological stress on the physiological body. Impact of the immune system and immune responses on the brain mechanisms related to behavior. System of hormones that mediate responses to stress by a cascade that starts at the hypothalamus and ends at the adrenal cortex and they feedback on each other. In terms of response to stress, part of that response is mediated by this energy cascade. The adrenal cortex is mediating the release of cortisol. Negative feedback loop because as the stressor goes away, have less psychological response to the stressor and so have less release of the corticotropic-releasing hormone and then less release of acth and then less release of cortisol. Cortisol not only mediates this response to stress by activating the hypothalamus but it also activates a number of other physiological systems including the digestive system, energy expenditure and storage, and immune system.
