Document Summary
P-orbitals can either combine end-on or side-on . If two atoms are located along the x-axis in a cartesian coordinate system, the two px orbitals overlap end to end. We have now used the px , and this leaves only py and pz orbitals. The py and pz orbitals will be oriented side by side so these four atomic orbitals combine pairwise to combine pairwise to create two sets of pie and pie* orbitals (total mos) Except for orientation, the pie(py) and pie(pz) orbitals are identical and have the same energy. Pie*(py) and pie*(pz) antibonding orbitals are also degenerate and identical except for their orientation. Each atom in the second row has both s and p orbitals in the valence shell. Expected order for the filling of these orbitals is shows in the figure. Usually omit the core electrons from molecular orbitals diagrams and show only the valence e- s-p orbital mixing.
