Segment 1: gods, humans and gods and humans in hesiod. Theogony: comes from the words theos (god) gone (birth) [essentially meaning birth of gods] Hesiod"s was the earliest and most important. Provides take on how the universe is structured and how it came about. How gods are genealogically and hierarchically related. Herodotus: basically saying homer and hesiod were the first therefore giving the most meaning to the gods. Homer, zeus is eldest born olympian [hesiod, both zeus and cronus are the youngest born] Homer, aphrodite is zeus" daughter [hesiod story cronus" penis cut off and falls in water in which aphrodite emerges] * ovid roman writer from 1st century * He is an initiate of the muses// why he believes he has the truest version of the theogony. Tries to put them in systematic order. Popular gods are placed alongside abtractions that don"t seem to fit . I. e. how does zeus fit with etc.
