Slide 63: japan has 3 different plates coming together. Has a lot of active volcanoes that erupt every 5-10 years. Usual weather was thought to cause earthquakes. Nobi earthquake really changed perspective and caused people to look at seismic activity. Great kanto earthquake in tokyo caused horrific deaths which pushed for earthquake preparedness on sept 1st because of what happened in 1923. Chikyu (the earth) boats detects seismic waves and tries to warn people of earthquakes earlier than they occur. Shows stripes on ocean floor produced by spreading. Everything is moving northwards and being subducted by arch. Unusual to have high mountain near sea level. Bigger the earthquake, the greater the sustenance (?) 1906- major earthquake at san andreas fault (red line) affect san francisco. One part of the fault is always moving, while others are locked. Problems are blind faults which you can"t see (dt, wealthy communities, etc)
