Very small microorganism capable of reproduction only within living cells: hep a, norovirus (nowalk-like viruses) Not usually measured directly in drinking water protozoa. Single-celled microorganisms that lacka a cell wall. Currently to of major concern in drinking water: cryptosporidium parvum, giardia lamblia bacteria. Microorganisms usually one cell: campylobacter, pathogenic e. coli, salmonella, shigella, vibrio. Used as indicator organisms: algal toxins, why important public health, regulation. Indicator organisms: sign that pathogens are or could be present. Total coliform bacteria not all are pathogens. E. coli indicates fecel contamination: if indicator organisms are absent, disease producing organisms are probably also absent, advantages.
