LINA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Morphos, Part Of Speech, Affix
Document Summary
Morphology comes from the greek morphos (form) and logos (science) Morphology deals with categorization of words, internal word structures, and processes by which a language creates and modifies words. Within our mental lexicon we store sounds from which we then create words. It does not have to occur in a fixed position with respect to neighboring elements. It does not have to connect to something else to have meaning. Can be broken down into smaller sounds, but sans meaning. If the addition of smt changes the meaning of a word it is a morpheme. But if it is not able to stand on its own, it is not too significant. Free morpheme-a word/it can stand on its own. 3 morphemes un=not, happi=happy, ness=the state of [being] Each morpheme has meaning, but some cannot create meaning on their own. Words are created from the smallest/most basic unit of morphemes.
