LINA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Affix, Phoneme, Complementary Distribution
Document Summary
Slide 8: morphological rule: has to state the rule. Even the same affix is attach to different words they are known to be different morphemes (one who v"s) (more) Bear (v), bear (n), bare (adj) same pronunciation. Allomorphs of a morpheme: different pronunciations of the same morpheme, complementary distribution. Slide 17: some data- the rule of allomorphy. [z] is the else case: it"s always the elsewhere case that"s the underlining phoneme. The morpheme / z / is pronounced [s] after voiceless stops. The morpheme / z / is pronounced [s] after sibilants: if it"s predictable where it happens meaning that they are allomorph of the same phoneme, they are also complementary. Slide 18: which allomorphy used depends on the sound that comes before or after it. Morphological rule always talks about categories: e. g. A single underlying form (abstract pronunciation) is stored for the morpheme.
