Digestive system in humans consists of two major components: digestive tract. Esophagus: food stuffs go through the esophagus, sphincter that controls entry of food into esophagus. Stomach: another sphincter that controls entry of food into stomach, more importantly controls backflow of stomach acid back up the esophagus. Small intestine: most foodstuffs continue digestion and nutrient absorption through intestine (early parts) Large intestine: several regions, predominantly involved with water and ion reclaiming (reabsorption) Work to excrete or secrete substances into this tract to facilitate digestion. Hundreds of functions: increases bile to be secreted into small intestine. Exocrine function: digestive enzymes secreted into digestive tract. Refers to a hole in the body; not really inside body. Where term exocrine" outside body comes from. Major processes and functions of digestive system is the breakdown of digestive foodstuffs. Absorbed through wall of the gut into the bloodstream.
