Describe how humanistic and existential therapies differ from psychodynamic therapy; list the basic components of person-centered therapy. Explain the similarities and differences between cognitive therapies and behaviour therapies and describe the techniques of cognitive restructuring and cognitive behavioural therapy. Discuss the abc model for cognitive restructuring psychodynamic therapy. Freud thought that at different points in childhood different issues w/ certain development areas could lead to fixations which became issues/conflicts in adulthood. Interpersonal psychotherapy (ipt) replaced some of freud"s methods w/ a focus on grief, role disputes, role transitions, interpersonal deficits. Can be better b/c it"s less abstract. More current; easier to remember humanistic/existential therapies. Humanism: more positive view on humanity; focuses on people"s hopes/aspirations instead of their conflicts. Person-centred therapy assumes individuals have a tendency toward growth; centres on acceptance and genuine reactions from therapist.
