Document Summary

Articulate difference between signs and symbols when it comes to emotional expression. Darwin"s universality hypothesis and the facial feedback hypothesis. How to catch someone faking an emotion. Emotional expression: emotional expressions are observable signs of an emotional state (not symbols) The way the person walks (rhythm of gait) i. e. we walk slower when we are actually feeling sad. Charles darwin (of evolutionary fame) proposed that facial expressions are evolved and therefore are universal in the human population. Because he believed it would help us survive (thus having a crucial importance on evolution) E. g. our eyes squint because we want to make sure bacteria/dangerous material get in our eyes (evolutionary advantage) E. g. our eyes, nostrils, and mouth open up when we"re scared (fear) because it opens up our muscles, so we can fight/flight if necessary. Individuals with visual impairments that have never seen a human face similarly to seeing humans.
