Document Summary
Psyb20 lecture 2 conception, heredity and environment. *note that most of the notes are from the lecture, but some are from the textbook. Follicular phase- ovarian follicles mature: estrogen levels peak towards the end. Controlled by the hypothalamus: luteinizing hormone (lh) secreted, follicle-stimulating hormone (fsh) secreted. Men: several hundred million sperm are produced in the testicles each day. Women: have about 2 million immature ova in their ovaries at birth, each contained a follicle, ovulation occurs about once every 28 days until menopause. Conception: process by which sperm and ovum combine to create a single cell called a zygote. Infertility: inability to conceive after 12 months of trying, men. E. g. lower than 60 million to 200 million per ejaculation makes conception unlikely. Some men appear to have gene mutations that affect the quality and quantity of sperm they produce. Less affected by age, but declines significantly by the late 30s: women.
