PSYB30H3 Lecture 3: LEC 03
Document Summary
Lec 03 chapter 3 traits and trait taxonomies. Trait-descriptive adjectives words that describe traits, attributes of a person that are reasonably characteristic of the person and perhaps enduring over time. Personality psychologists hypothesize that traits are stable over time and consistent over situations but this is subject to debate. Taxonomy organized scheme within which to assemble the traits. Trait pov is the dominant personality psychology approach. Trait theory emphasis is on the person rather than on the situation or the environment. Traits are thought to reflect motivational systems that increase adaptation to positive or negative stimuli. Others feel that ignoring other factors is a weakness of this theory. Continuity (continuous variables) in thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Focus on individual differences rather than on intrapersonal processes. Traits relatively enduring dispositions that exert a consistent influence on behaviours in a variety of situations: broad personality characteristics, the same in different situations.
