We pay attention to some objects but not to others. Distinctiosn in varieties of attention: attention can be internal or external. External attention: attention to stimuli in the world. Internal attention: our ability to attend to one line of thought as opposed to another or to select one response over another: it can be overt or covert. Overt attention: directing a sense organ at a stimulus. Covert attention: ability to attend to a stimulus without shifting one"s gaze towards it: divided attention: concentrating on more than one thing, sustained attention: ability to direct and focus cognitive activity on specific stimuli. Selective attention: form of attention involved when processing is restricted to a subset of the possible stimuli. Reaction time (rt): measure of the time from the onset of a stimulus to a response.
