Document Summary
Goffman noted 3 types of stigmas abominations of the body: physical deformities, being overweight . Blemishes of indiv character: drunkness tribal stigmas of race, nation, and religion, prej against another race. Prev research shows that indivs faced w external threats show stronger ingroup identification. Whether the indiv has already stongley personally identified w their stigmatized group will have a major impace on the degree to which that indic dissosicates from the group. Doosje & ellemers: ppl differ in the degree to which they identify w their stigmatized group. High identifiers more likely to associate themselves w their group: even when (esp when) it has a (-) image. Derive much of their self-esteem from their identification as a group member. More likely to seek collective strategies against group threat. Make it clear that they are full committed, loyal group members, who are, in it for the long run.
