May be so we can take in info form caregiver & be the beneficiary of the vertical cultural transmission: must learn valuable info from caregiver. Lorenz & tinbergen: took newborn turkey chicks. Wanted to see if they have instincts to avoid predator birds. Does infant chick learn to avoid them or just born with the response. Showed them shadows of predators (hawk) or shadows of non-predators (duck: results duck= chicks didn"t avoid; hawk= they avoided it. They know that this is bad & to avoid it. Don"t learn this form experience, they just know. 150 phonemes (units of sound) each lang uses 70 phonemes. Mcgurk effect: what we see overrides what we hear.
