Document Summary
Week 12 lecture #11: monday march 21, 2016. Collective action: occurs when people act in unison to bring about or resist social, political, and economic change (p. 528) Broadly speaking, social movements do not always consider social justice and may at times endeavor to maintain hegemony: vancouver riot of september 7, 1907. Sparked by white trade unionists who were trying to convince the american and canadian governments to keep chinese, japanese, hindus, and sikhs out of north america (p. 529) Specified that social movements are the result of one of three conditions: discontent of socially marginal people. People may consider themselves as occupying a marginal role in society or an erosion in status: violation of norms/strain. By 1907, one-quarter of male workers in the province were of asian origin. Secondly, many white workers perceived themselves as undergoing relative deprivation. An intolerable gap between the social rewards people feel they deserve and the social rewards they expect to receive (p. 530)
