SOCB50H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Provincial And Territorial Courts In Canada, Scared Straight!, Precariat
Document Summary
Last week we talked about trait theories: biological theories used to describe deviance and normality and crime. Caesar precariat in late 18th century: had a brother known as the keeper of keys in italian city. Had a key to the prison: saw the horrors of tortures to prison inmates and death penalties, wrote on crime and punishment . Wrote an early theory of crime and deviance. Used this to recommend reform in eliminating corporal punishment. Deviance and crime are normal, rational, logical. We all have the choice to commit crimes, even if we don"t notice it in the moment. Choice is logical and thought-through: cost-benefit analyses. Proposed that the costs should outweigh the benefits to prevent crime. Punishment was an important part of reducing crime and deviance. Punishment had to fit the crime the more serious the crime, the more serious the punishment.
