To explain the line that describes the linear association b/w these two variables: we can model the relationship with a line and give its equation, our first model was in ch. 6 the normal model w/ 2 parameters : mean. & sd: the next model is linear model it is just an equation of a straight-line through data. Even though it cannot go through all points, it can summarize with some points: residuals. This line is called . linear model or best fit. This line may not even touch any points but it will be closer than any other line. Predicted value ( or fitted value or fit) estimate made from a model (____) Drawing the best fit line means that some residuals would be ve & +"ve. We square the residuals makes them all +"ve. After adding all the residuals up- it tells us how well the line we drew fit the data: smaller sum = better fit.
