Lecture 4: the rise of religions part 2. The roman empire was broken into two by the emperors themselves in 395 ad: they turned into the western roman empire and the byzantine empire. It was discovered at around the medieval period from 400 to 1400: early christian, byzantine, latin (western) europe. This is the way that khan academy organizes the chronological order: they seem to skim past some eras, artificial separation. At around the 7th century, there were three forces that have parallel development: frankish kingdom, byzantine empire, umayyad caliphate. Characteristics of the depiction of body in byzantine and / or medieval western european art includes: elongated body, golden background, dis-proportioned head and body, highly stylistic depiction of drapery, degrees of abstraction. However, these kind of artworks in the byzantine and / or medieval western european did show any. It also shows a golden background and triangular composition.
