Document Summary

Purpose of respiratory system is facilitate exchange of gases between air and blood. Divide respiratory system to conduction portion and respiratory portion different jobs so structurally different. No gas exchange in any of these structures happens later on in respiratory portion. Lungs are roughly triangular they have an apex and a base base is always opposite to apex. Right lung is shorter top to bottom , liver sits in upper right quadrant of abdomen and like heart impinging on left lung this impinges on right lung and ends up being shorter, left lung longer. Because of heart, left lung more narrow and right lung fatter. Ribs don"t run around front to back horizontally, they descend quite sharply from attachment to back towards front oblique ribs are running so see many in horizontal section. Respiratory mucosa consists of 2 layers: respiratory epithelium is pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells and underneath connective tissue support is lamina propria.
